The
Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota was installed on November 16,
1969, by national president Ruth Gould and national treasurer Lottie Hutzel. There were fifteen charter members; Jean Foster was our first president. The following January eleven more members were affiliated. One highlight of our first year was a tea for alumnae of Sigma Alpha
Iota, Mu Phi Epsilon, Delta Omicron and Phi Beta, for the purpose of forming and
Interfraternity Alumnae Club to promote cooperation and communication among the
different groups. Another highlight
was a concert featuring our three local honorary members; Ruth Posselt, Elena
Nilolaidi and Mary Norris.
Our
membership has fluctuated during the years since, but our chapter has continued
to sponsor various service projects such as working with the Tallahassee Arts
Council to furnish music programs for the schools, holding a refresher course
for adults on their band instruments, and giving a scholarship to the FSU Music
Camp to a deserving student.
After nearly a
decade of inactivity, Anne Marie Snyder, Heather Bas and Sara Adams met on
January 21, 2002 for what was the first meeting of the Tallahassee Alumnae
Group. After two years of hard work, the Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter was
reinstated on January 24, 2004, at the Lambda Province Weekend in Gainesville,
Florida. The Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter
has dedicated sisters who are committed to see the chapter flourish and make
significant contributions to the Tallahassee musical community.
